All things considered, the Japan Rail Pass is still going to be a good buy. It's not THAT much more and you do need to do a bit more to make it worth the cost however, it is still amazing.

Also, the Japan Rail Pass isn't the only thing out there. As I wrote in the below article, there are MANY more JR rail passes out there.

Right now, I highly suggest the Hokuriku Arch Pass as this is essentially the same for people looking to go as far as Kyoto but also snakes its way up through Kanazawa and central Japan.
